CLINIC SESSION 8

SUNDAY 17 JULY at 10.15am

8BA: Teaching Music with Promise: 25 MORE Things You Can Do Tomorrow To Improve Your Ensemble
Peter Boonshaft (Alfred)
This session offers twenty-five MORE simple things you can do to improve the quality of your ensemble, make any rehearsal more productive and energize the power of your teaching. Useful for conductors of any level and type of ensemble.

8ST: Teaching Technique and Expressive Playing Through Repertoire
Bob Phillips (Alfred)
Specific ideas and teaching tools will be presented that can be used with grade 1 and 2 band and string repertoire to teach technique and develop expressive playing. Examples from both band and string repertoire will be demonstrated.

8CH: Stop being a Metronome – lose the beat to create a more musical rehearsal and performance
Jenny Mathers (ANCA)
Being an expressive conductor can be a major challenge for beginner and experienced conductors alike. Be brave – let go of the beat patterns and find out how to make music! Participants should expect to sing with each other to form a choral ensemble designed to provide instant feedback to anyone brave enough to conduct! Using the work of pioneering movement theorists and their devotees, discover fun ways to make the most of every note and nuance.

8CO: Big Band Rhythm Sections – An Endangered Species
Jeff Jarvis (Kendor Music and Yamaha)
Why is it that one of the hottest selling instruments in music stores is the bass, but most school jazz bands don’t have a bassist? Strategies for recruitment of rhythm sections are discussed, as well as what to do with them once you’ve found them! Often, the rhythm section is the most neglected group in the big band, while most of the attention is directed toward the horns. This clinic will show educators that do not play rhythm instruments how to engage these valuable players during rehearsals.

8SE: Marimbas for Year 7 and 8
Jon Madin (VOSA/aMuse)
An amazing smorgasbord of ideas for hands-on music making using marimbas and many other Jon Madin’s ingeniously created instruments. You will go away with a wealth of repertoire and activity ideas.

8PR: Every school a choir - quality singing for all at primary level
Peter Hunt and Jo McNally (Oxford University Press)
Starting with the belief that every child can sing, this workshop will show how to engage 7 - 11 year olds in confident singing. It will explore a range of repertoire and activities that engage and enthuse young children, show a range of teaching and learning strategies that develop vocal ability quickly, and establish good practice for further choral training. This practical session will demonstrate to delegates through their own participation, the value of singing as a joyous activity, and its contribution to developing the whole child.
This workshop is suitable for:
Teachers at primary level with an interest in singing; music specialists or coordinators responsible for the school music or choir programme; experienced vocal teachers who want to develop the quality of their children’s vocal work; those seeking new and exciting repertoire from the UK, and some novel fun ways of teaching young singers to engage and participate. Also for anyone who just wants to come have some fun singing!

8MT: DVD in an Hour!
Joshua Cowie and Dave Rogers (the Arts Centre Digital Learning Hub)
Come and join the crew as we attempt to create a school choir promotional/fundraising DVD within 60 minutes. Step inside the marvel that is the sound stage (well - a room with a video camera and a portable sound recorder), be amazed by stunning visual effects (some basic plug-ins in Sony Vegas) and wonder at the financial returns on your investment (make it for free, print it at $5 a disc and sell it for $20). You spend all year teaching the material anyway, your school probably has the resources and expertise already, so let’s pull it all together to promote the music program and raise some funds!
