In this session you will discover new ways to effectively use multiple technologies in private lessons, sectionals, and full band rehearsals - all with minimal teacher preparation while using the Tradition of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method. Special emphasis will be placed on ways to weave technology together with standards-based pedagogy to develop comprehensive musicianship in every student.

6CO: Musical Futures: Non-formal teaching
Alex Howes and Ken Owen
(Soundhouse Music Alliance and Australian Music Association)
In this second Musical Futures session Ken workshops another of the teaching and learning approaches used in Musical Futures. Non-formal teaching uses a number of approaches including:
• Immediacy and exploration
• Tacit learning – music being ‘caught’ not ‘taught’
• An inclusive approach to music making that lowers barriers to entry
• Group based activities built around performing, listening, composing and improvising
• Peer learning, co-constructed content and objectives
• Development of skills such as responsibility, empathy, creativity and the development of solution
6SM: AMEB Theory Online
Alwyn Mott (AMEB)
The AMEB now offers unprecedented ease-of-access to theory examinations via an online option. Online examinations are currently available in Theory of Music (1st and 2nd Grades), Musicianship (1st and 2nd Grades), Music Craft (Preliminary, 1st and 2nd Grades), with further grades in development. Online courses in AMEB Theory of Music will soon be available. This session will demonstrate AMEB’s online examination facility and workshop participants will be able to experience, ‘hands-on’, an actual AMEB theory examination, online.
6PR: 4-Beat Patterns to 12-Bar Blues Fun!
Sharon Burch (Hal Leonard)
Sharon Burch, creator/author of the Freddie the Frog® books, will share how primary students can easily progress from composing a four-beat pattern to the 12-bar blues with the help of a frog and elephant and a few sticks in their hands. Simple improvisation is added to complete the blues experience.
6MT: Notating Drum and Percussion Parts
Katie Wardrobe (Midnight Music)
Creating clear, easy-to-read drum and percussion parts is one of the more complex tasks faced by arrangers and composers, especially if you are not a drummer or percussionist yourself. This session will answer all your burning questions about drum set notation, including: which part of the drum kit goes on each line or space? Which notehead to should I use? How do I notate common drum patterns like basic rock, jazz/swing, disco, samba, bossa and country? Using Sibelius, Katie Wardrobe will show you how to work with two voices on one stave, how to avoid strange stem alignment issues, how to make your score playback correctly (at the right tempo and with the right “feel”) and discuss drum notation conventions such as repeat bar signs, numbering and slash notation. We’ll also cover notation of orchestral percussion instruments and use Sibelius’s Ideas window to store your drum patterns for future use in any score.
