CLINIC SESSION 4
SATURDAY 16 JULY at 10.15am
4BA: Achieving unity and consensus between performance and classroom music education
Monte Mumford (ABODA)
This clinic aims at exploring ways in which we may address the important issues of unity, alignment and consensus of overall music education goals within the high school music department through examining the common ground we share in core values between classroom and performance music education curriculum. We will also investigate ways of integrating itinerate music staff into our core values and music performance education philosophy.
4ST: Intonation Challenges in String Ensembles and the Private Studio
Fintan Murphy (AUSTA)
Why do students who listen to so much music play so out of tune? And why do students who can sing (if forced to!) also play out of tune? Bring your instruments to work on practical exercises to improve intonation in the string ensemble and the practice room.
4CH: Singing through the ages – how to motivate youngsters and embrace the changing voice
Peter Hunt and Jo McNally (Oxford University Press)
Keeping young singers going as they approach the teenage years is a challenge, particularly for boys whose voices are developing. This lively and interactive workshop will address the issues of motivation and achievement for the 12 – 16+ year olds; exploring rehearsal routines and expectations; suitability of repertoire for the expanding youth choir; vocal health and how to get more from the voice. Consideration will be given to planning a choral programme that includes valuable warm up routines to help with vocal/choral training.
This workshop is suitable for:
Music specialists working with this age group, and choir trainers/conductors who want to extend their repertoire and broaden the appeal of their vocal work with young people. Also for less experienced choir trainers who want to develop their own vocal pedagogy to help young people improve their vocal confidence.
4CO: Improvisation: A Melodic Approach
Jeff Jarvis (Kendor Music and Yamaha)
If Columbus was able to prove that the earth wasn’t flat, than we can prove once and for all, there is more to jazz improvisation than the Bb Blues Scale. While continually addressing conventional approaches to jazz improvisation, Jeff discusses the importance of maintaining a close connection to melody vs. linking a string of patterns together during an improvised solo. This presentation stresses a non-threatening aural approach, minimizing, but not sidestepping, references to traditional theory and nomenclature. Remember, if someone you don’t know approaches you on the street and offers you a Blues Scale-Just Say No!
4SE: Catholic Schools and Music: Dealing with the new translation
Larissa Cairns and Joshua Cowie
Did you know that the Catholic Church has retranslated the mass text from Latin to English? This means that the words to the Gloria, Holy Holy, and the Acclamations have changed. What does this mean? That the masses you sing in school liturgies need to be updated or replaced. Be guided through the changes and introduced to new and revised mass settings by St Francis’s Church Cantor and Star of the Sea teacher Larissa Cairns, and mass composer, editor and typesetter Joshua Cowie.
4PR: Introducing . . . Beat, Rhythm and Tempo . . . to Kids!
Sharon Burch (Hal Leonard)
Sharon Burch, creator of the Freddie the Frog® books, will share how a puppet, stories and interactive games make tempo terms and the difference between beat and rhythm easy to understand and fun! Students experience the concepts through an interactive story and progress to four-beat patterns composed by the kids.
