CLINIC SESSION 2
FRIDAY 15 JULY at 12.00pm
2BA: Teaching Music with Purpose: 25 Things You Can Do Tomorrow To Improve Your Ensemble
Peter Boonshaft (Alfred)
This session offers twenty-five simple things you can do to improve the quality of your ensemble, make any rehearsal more productive and energize the power of your teaching. Useful for conductors of any level and type of ensemble.
2ST: Demystifying Viola and Cello: Teaching Viola and Cello in a Violin-centric world
Frances Gall and Anna Daniel (AUSTA)
In this session Frances and Anna will look at differences and similarities between viola, cello and violin technique. We will explore tone production, intonation and vibrato ideas for teaching on all three instruments, and look at reading in a new clef. Bring your instrument to try out these ideas. Some violas will be supplied.
2CH: The choral conductor’s craft
George Torbay (Hal Leonard)
This session is designed for the choral conductor and aims to develop confidence and practical skills which can be used with any age group, type of choir or group of singers. The session consists of active participation with an opportunity to conduct and observe. The session will focus on the basic mechanics of conducting, the issues of the conductor-vocalist relationship and more.
2CO: Musical Futures: In the Deep End – Informal Learning
Alex Howes and Ken Owen
(Soundhouse Music Alliance and Australian Music Association)
The Informal learning in the music classroom model aims to enhance student motivation, enjoyment and skill acquisition in music lessons by tapping into the real-life learning practices of popular musicians. Most music teachers would place the motivation of their students high on their list of priorities, not only because motivation is an end in itself, but also because it is a prime building block in the acquisition of music skills and knowledge. This session will introduce teachers to the informal learning model built around the five key principles of:
• Learning music that students choose, like and identify with
• Learning through listening and copying
• Learning with friends
• Assimilating skills in a personal way
• Integrating listening, performing, improvising and composing
This practical workshop will feature the silent music classroom, integrating the use of technology using the revolutionary JamHub mixers, Roland electronic kits, keyboards, electric guitars, bass and vocals all monitored through headphones.
2SE: Practical Composition in the Classroom
Karen Kyriakou
Join composer Karen Kyriakou in a practical, hands-on workshop for classroom music teachers and explore ideas for classroom composition activities. Bring your ‘Inner-Year-7-self’ and your instrument, or maybe borrow an auxiliary percussion instrument from your department (or at the very least, bring a coffee cup and spoon)! With the initial invention of a short riff, the session will develop the most basic melodic and rhythmic material to create an exciting group composition.
2PR:Ssinging together – Introducing young children to their first vocal experience
Peter Hunt and Jo McNally (Oxford University Press)
This practical, lively and fun workshop will show you how to energize and enthuse 4 – 7 year olds through songs, rhymes and games. It will focus on promoting sound singing techniques and how to encourage the development of important social skills.
This workshop is suitable for:
Generalist teachers who want to use singing and music games in the education programme to enhance children’s personal development, coordination, mental ability and social skills, and for music specialists seeking new ideas for good quality vocal work with the young.
2MT: Pro tools in the Classroom
Dave Rogers (the Arts Centre Digital Learning Hub)
Pro Tools has long been considered the industry standard Digital Audio Workstation for professionals and hobbyists alike. The latest release, Pro Tools 9, includes a suite of high quality virtual instruments and plug ins, providing users with the tools to compose and produce music on a budget.
