CLINIC SESSION 1
FRIDAY 15 JULY at 10.15am

1BA: Exploring the practical and effective use of ensemble rehearsal warm-ups in a music education environment
Monte Mumford (ABODA)
This clinic will focus on the practical and effective use of ensemble rehearsal warm-ups. We will explore related study and training material with a view of aiding our ensembles to meet both the technical and musical demands of our repertoire selection along with applications to the broader picture of music education through performance. We will also explore how we may develop a positive learning environment through creating effective rehearsal structure through formulating logical rehearsal/lesson plans with identifiable and achievable outcomes.

1ST: Top Ten Tips for Teaching Strings
Bob Phillips 1 (Alfred)
Greatest hits of string teaching including pedagogy, classroom management, group process and delivery skills. Practical solutions to real world challenges.

1CH: Vocal Pedagogy for Choral Conductors – Know Your Instrument
Bob Stewart (ANCA)
Does this sound familiar? You just started at your new school and find yourself conducting the choir; you’re an instrumentalist now running the choral program; or you just want to improve your skills and learn more about the instrument in front of you. As a choral conductor you are building the “instrument” while learning to play it. This session will examine basic concepts of vocal pedagogy including posture, breathing and resonance. We’ll look at how knowing a bit about the singing instrument can help you with common problems like intonation and tone quality while building a vibrant, healthy choral ensemble.

1CO: Digital Music: Composition and Performance
Dylan Redman (DEECD – SMR)
This session will provide an overview of some of the software such as Garageband, Pro Tools, Reason and FL Studio as well as hardware such as samplers and turntables available to teachers on Mac and PC platforms which they can use with their students to inspire them to write and perform their own music.

1SE: Great Activities for Your Teaching Toolkit
Sue Arney (aMuse/Hal Leonard)
Resources, resources, resources for immediate use as units or one-offs in Years 7 – 10. Come and load up nifty tips to get the ‘Wow!’ factor back into classes with great opening activities; performance pieces for readers and non-readers; instructional DVDs for world music and creative ideas for composition.

1PR: Real Musicianship in the Primary Classroom
Susan Searle (KMEIA)
Practical music skills for a lifetime in music.

1MT: Free Music Technology Resources for Teachers (and How To Use Them)
Katie Wardrobe (Midnight Music)
There’s a wealth of free technology resources available online which are ideal for music teachers and students, but which ones are the best, where can they be found and how can they be incorporated into the music curriculum? This session will explore free resources that will help you record students, edit audio (including removing vocals from a song!), create original loops from scratch, notate music and make your own worksheets. We’ll also look at interactive music websites and discover free professional learning opportunities that are available 24/7.
