ABOUT SOUNDS GREAT! 2011
Sounds Great is the Victorian statewide music education conference. Sounds Great is an extensive professional learning event that consists of inspiring keynote addresses, exemplary student performances, practical and theoretical breakout sessions, a trade exhibition and social activities. Sounds Great explores pedagogy, curriculum approaches, rehearsal and conducting techniques, repertoire, jazz and improvisation, music advocacy and technology. The expertise of the local and international presenters is rich and varied. The depth and breadth of professional learning opportunities at Sounds Great is extraordinary. Sounds Great is a meeting place for all music educators from Government, Catholic and Independent schools, a bringing together of instrumental and classroom music teachers from prep to VCE – for all methods and all philosophies of music education.
Venue
Melbourne High School is the only selective State School in Victoria for boys in Years 9-12. The School continues to maintain its standing as one of the finest schools in Australia. Enrolment at Year 9 is determined by an Entrance Examination, held in June each year. High academic expectations continue throughout the School, resulting in outstanding VCE results and tertiary placements. Excellent facilities and teaching staff ensure that students develop quality academic approaches to learning, keen personal ambition, an optimistic spirit and a desire to make a significant contribution to society. Melbourne High School has a long held tradition and passion for singing and a year-long massed singing program for Year 9 and 10 students. .
Keynotes
Sounds Great has assembled an inspiring line up of keynote presenters who are sponsored by our publishing partners Alfred, Hal Leonard, Kjos and Oxford University Press. We are thrilled to be able to host so many outstanding international presenters. Each day of the conference will feature one or two keynote presentations that will also includes a performance by an outstanding student group.
Clinics
The depth and breadth of the clinics offered at Sounds Great is truly amazing. There is enough excellent content here to fuel a music education conference for a month. Unfortunately, we only have three days. There is something for everyone at Sounds Great. Many of the clinics are interactive. Delegates should bring their main instrument if possible. CLinic streams have been organised for: band, strings, choral, secondary, primary, contemporary, and technology.
Trade Exhibition
Retailers and publishers will be on site to provide delegates with an opportunity to peruse and purchase sheet music, instruments, text books, hardware, software and accessories.
Catering
Registration includes coffee and tea on arrival, morning tea and lunch, which will be served in the campus cafeteria. Please advise if there are any special dietary requirements.
Pre Conference Reception
Sounds Great! offers several opportunities to mix with your colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere. Kick off the conference at the Pre-conference Reception at 7.00pm on Thursday 14 July at BMW Edge @ Federation Square. Guest artisits will be Gianni Marinucci and Jeff Jarvis. Many of the local and international presenters will be there as well as many of the traders. Please indicate your attendance on the registration form. A cash bar will operate.
Conference Dinner
The Conference Dinner will be held at 7.30 pm at Bokchoy Tang @ Federation Square. The cost of the dinner is $75 per head.
Costs
Full registration fee is $395 which includes the Pre-conference Reception. Daily registration fees are $185 per day for Friday or Saturday, and $160 for Sunday. Attend any two days for $275. Full time undergraduate tertiary students may attend for half price. Student ID required.
